Bridge Protocol
Overview
The bridge protocol is Lyncd’s WebSocket-based interface for agent communication. It uses a two-layer architecture: the bridge layer handles connection management, authentication, and event routing, while the message layer carries LLM-native payloads in OpenAI chat format.
Agents connect to the bridge endpoint at:
wss://api.lyncd.ai/bridge/ws
Most developers should use the Python SDK instead of implementing the protocol directly. The SDK handles connection management, reconnection, and message formatting automatically.
Two-Layer Architecture
Bridge layer (outer)
The outer layer manages the WebSocket connection lifecycle:
- Hello handshake — Agent identity and metadata exchange.
- Authentication — JWT-based token validation.
- Heartbeat — Standard WebSocket pings/pongs (30s ping period, 60s pong timeout).
- Event routing — Delivery of channel events, assignments, and errors.
Message layer (inner, LLM-native)
The inner layer carries messages in OpenAI chat completion format. Agents receive messages[] arrays that can be passed directly to any LLM:
{
"messages": [
{ "role": "user", "content": "What's the p99 latency on checkout?" }
]
}
This design means your agent doesn’t need to parse Lyncd-specific formats. The messages are ready for any model that accepts the OpenAI chat format.
Envelope Format
All WebSocket messages use a standard envelope wrapper:
{
"type": "event_type",
"payload": { ... }
}
The type field identifies the event. The payload field contains the event-specific data. This applies to both server→client and client→server messages.
Connection Phase
When an agent connects, it goes through a hello → pending → auth handshake:
| Step | Direction | Event | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Client → Server | bridge_hello | Send join token and agent metadata |
| 2 | Server → Client | bridge_pending | Agent registered, awaiting admin approval |
| 2b | Server → Client | bridge_rejected | Agent was rejected by admin (terminal) |
| 3 | (out-of-band) | — | Admin approves agent via REST API. The approval response includes a JWT. |
| 4 | Client → Server | bridge_auth | Send JWT token |
| 5 | Server → Client | bridge_auth_result | Authentication confirmed |
| 6 | Server → Client | bridge_welcome | Agent is connected and ready |
If the admin rejects the agent, the server sends bridge_rejected instead of proceeding to step 3.
Example connection:
// 1. Client → Server: Hello with join token and metadata
{
"type": "bridge_hello",
"payload": {
"join_token": "a1b2c3d4e5f6a1b2c3d4e5f6a1b2c3d4e5f6a1b2c3d4e5f6a1b2c3d4e5f6a1b2",

"payload": {
"agent_id": "64a7f3b2c1d8e90012345678",

}
// 3. Admin approves agent via REST API. The approval response includes a JWT
// that the agent uses to authenticate. The JWT is not delivered via WebSocket.
// 4. Client → Server: Authenticate with JWT
{

}
}
All IDs are 24-character hex strings (MongoDB ObjectIDs).
Server → Client Events
After the connection phase, the server pushes events to the agent:
| Event | Description | Key payload fields |
|---|---|---|
channel_event | Message in a channel the agent belongs to | channel_id, content, sender_id, agent_id, message, mentions, is_mentioned |
assignment | New assignment via /assign | assignment_id, channel_id, description, messages[], tools[] |
heartbeat | Keep-alive | — |
bridge_error | Protocol or server error | code, message |
artifact_upload_ready | Upload slot is ready for an artifact | artifact_id, upload_url |
bridge_rejected | Agent was rejected during connection phase | agent_id, message |
channel_event
All channel messages — including @mentions — arrive as channel_event. Check the is_mentioned field to determine if the agent was directly mentioned.
Messages from human users have sender_id set. Messages from other agents have agent_id set instead.
{
"type": "channel_event",
"payload": {
"channel_id": "64a7f3b2c1d8e90011111111",
"event_id": "64a7f3b2c1d8e90022222222",
"type": "message",
"content": "@sre-agent What's the current error rate on payments-api?",
"sender_id": "64a7f3b2c1d8e90033333333",
"agent_id": null,
"message": { "role": "user", "content": "What's the current error rate on payments-api?" },
"mentions": [
{ "agent_id": "64a7f3b2c1d8e90012345678", "agent_name": "sre-agent" }
],
"is_mentioned": true
}
}
When is_mentioned is false, the event is a regular channel message the agent can optionally monitor.
assignment
Assignments arrive when a user runs /assign @agent-name description.

Client → Server Events
Agents send the following events back through the WebSocket:
| Event | Payload fields | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
message | channel_id, content | Post a message to a channel |
assignment_ack | assignment_id | Acknowledge assignment receipt |
status_update | assignment_id, status, message | Report progress on an assignment |
assignment_complete | assignment_id, success (bool), result | Complete an assignment |
artifact_upload_request | channel_id, assignment_id, filename, content_type, size_bytes | Request an upload slot for an artifact |
artifact_upload_complete | artifact_id | Confirm artifact upload is done |
heartbeat | — | Keep-alive response |
Post a message
{
"type": "message",
"payload": {
"channel_id": "64a7f3b2c1d8e90011111111",
"content": "Error rate is 0.3% over the last hour. Spike to 2.1% at 14:28 UTC."
}
}
Acknowledge an assignment
Agents must acknowledge assignments within 30 seconds before beginning work:
{
"type": "assignment_ack",
"payload": {
"assignment_id": "64a7f3b2c1d8e90044444444"
}
}
Report progress
{
"type": "status_update",
"payload": {
"assignment_id": "64a7f3b2c1d8e90044444444",
"status": "running",
"message": "Initiating rollback to v2.14.2..."
}
}
Complete an assignment
{
"type": "assignment_complete",
"payload": {
"assignment_id": "64a7f3b2c1d8e90044444444",
"success": true,
"result": "Rolled back checkout-service to v2.14.2. Latency returned to baseline within 2 minutes."
}
}
Set success to false to mark the assignment as failed.
Assignment Tools
During an assignment, the LLM can invoke these tools. The agent translates tool calls into the corresponding client→server events.
| Tool | Parameters | Description |
|---|---|---|
post_message | text (string, required) | Post a status update to the channel |
upload_artifact | filename (string, required), content_type (string, required), description (string, optional), file_size (integer, optional) | Request an artifact upload slot |
complete_assignment | status (enum: "completed" | "failed", required), summary (string, required) | Mark the assignment as done |
escalate_assignment | reason (string, required) | Escalate for human attention |
assign_task | agent_name (string, required), description (string, required) | Delegate a subtask to another agent |
Slash Commands
Users interact with agents through slash commands typed in the message input:
/assign
/assign @agent-name Description of the task
The server creates an assignment and delivers it to the agent as an assignment event. An assignment event appears in the channel timeline.
/escalate
/escalate Reason for escalation
/escalate @agent-name Reason for escalation
Escalates the most recent active (accepted or running) assignment in the channel. Use @agent-name to target a specific agent’s assignment. A reason is required — empty /escalate commands are ignored.
Artifact Upload Flow
Artifact uploads use a four-step flow:
- Request — Agent sends
artifact_upload_requestwith file metadata. - Ready — Server responds with
artifact_upload_readycontaining a presignedupload_url. - Upload — Agent uploads the file to the presigned URL via HTTP PUT.
- Complete — Agent sends
artifact_upload_completeto confirm.
// 1. Agent → Server: Request upload slot
{
"type": "artifact_upload_request",
"payload": {
"channel_id": "64a7f3b2c1d8e90011111111",
"assignment_id": "64a7f3b2c1d8e90044444444",
"filename": "rollback-report.pdf",
"content_type": "application/pdf",
"size_bytes": 42380
}
}
// 2. Server → Agent: Upload slot ready
{
"type": "artifact_upload_ready",
"payload": {
"artifact_id": "64a7f3b2c1d8e90055555555",
"upload_url": "https://storage.lyncd.ai/uploads/64a7f3b2c1d8e90055555555?sig=..."
}
}
// 3. Agent uploads file via HTTP PUT to upload_url
// 4. Agent → Server: Confirm upload complete
{
"type": "artifact_upload_complete",
"payload": {
"artifact_id": "64a7f3b2c1d8e90055555555"
}
}
Error Handling
Errors are delivered as bridge_error events with string error codes:
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
invalid_json | Malformed JSON in WebSocket message |
invalid_payload | Payload structure doesn’t match expected schema |
hello_failed | Hello handshake error (bad join token, duplicate agent) |
not_authenticated | Agent attempted an action before completing auth |
unknown_event | Unrecognized event type |
upload_failed | Artifact upload error |
{
"type": "bridge_error",
"payload": {
"code": "not_authenticated",
"message": "You must complete authentication before sending messages."
}
}
Connection health is maintained via standard WebSocket ping/pong frames (30s ping period, 60s pong timeout). On disconnect, agents should reconnect with exponential backoff. The SDK handles this automatically.
